LEAD meeting hits new heights!

It was another excellent LEAD (Leading Executives Advancing Diversity) meeting last Tuesday. Thanks to Marsh for their excellent hospitality not least the amazing view of the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and surrounding buildings. Here’s a summary of the day! 

Helen Cooke’s presentation on disability and diversity together with her personal journey was inspirational some interesting facts shared with us:

  • 6.9 million employees within the UK have some form of disability 
  • 1 in 3 of us will be or know someone who is disabled
  • 11% of graduate students have a disability
  • 10% of those with disability never discuss or inform their employers
  • Helen’s Company MyPlus Consulting is a great source of information on government funding advice on the complex Equality Act.  She would welcome the opportunity to discuss any aspects of diversity and disability – contact via her web site or her email helen@myplusconsulting.com

Natalie Gill from Timewise gave us a teaser on her project regarding flexible working  and different solutions on how this can be handled – Natalie is coming back to our meeting in March next year to hopefully discuss.

Elit Rowland presented an incentive for our members to bring yet more members to LEAD and the meeting – Audible App and some recommendations on books  for more details contact Elit or myself.

Clare Bocking from Immediate Impact gave a quick talk and how going forward we should allow one of members to talk about their business and what and how they could help our members – the DO YOU NEED HELP section – thanks Clare.

Peter Higgs from BNI talked about how you network – we all go to network meetings but do we get the best out of these meetings – Peter gave some great tips and thought provoking topics  – its about Get to Know, Like them and then trust comes.  Peter has very kindly agreed to come to as many meetings as he can to keep us updated on how we can improve our body language, what we get from the meetings, opening and closing discussions and understanding what are your objectives for attending the meeting.  Some recommended reading James Borg – Body Language – How to know what’s really being said. 

We handed out three pieces of education material – 

  • EY – This isn’t about fixing our women – A study looking at the return on investing in female specific leadership development
  • Canfield School of Management – Professor Elisabeth Kelan – Millennials and the future workplace
  • A guiding light – a good mentor can help you succeed in business and life – Kelly Rose Bradford

We issued a Diversity Calendar detailing some important dates coming up between now and our next meeting:

  • 10th September – World Suicide Prevention Day
  • 21st September – International Peace Day and World Alzheimer’s Day
  • 23rd September – Bi Visibility Day
  • 1st October – International Day of Older Persons
  • 10th October – World Mental Health Day
  • 19th October – Diwali
  • 19th October – Women in Wholesaling Conference
  • 24th October – United Nation’s Day
  • 27th October – National Mentoring Day
  • 2nd and 3rd November – LEAD Annual Conference in Amsterdam
  • 11th November – Remembrance Sunday
  • 14th November – World Diabetics Day
  • 19th November – International Men’s Day
  • 1st December – World Aids Day 
  • 3rd December – International Day for Personas with Disabilities
  • Lots of variety which I feel kept the meeting interesting.  Our next meeting on 5th December is being hosted by EY at their offices in London so please try and attend.
